Saffron, or Zafferano, was cultivated during the Middle Ages in the hills northern regions of Tuscany, strong influencing the economic growth at that time. It has been said that pirates would have rather attacked a ship of Saffron rather than a ship full of Gold! Given that each Croco flower only produces three red stigmas.
