The Story

VIN started off as La Meridiana, a rustic farmstay bought and refurbished in 2018. Traveling around Europe in a camper van looking at houses for sale, my father and I stumbled across this gem and did not look back.

We set off with the ambition to breathe life into the property and transform it into a home away from home. Since then, the project has grown, guests have become some of our closest friends and the property sees more life than ever before.

Although the agriturismo becomes more popular and the to-do list gets longer, my focus will always be to evolve in line with the core philosophies that brought us here in the first place: treating guests as family, innovating in ways that make things more fun, and most importantly, sharing our love for good wine and good food.

All this would not be possible without the drive and hard work of our fantastic staff, most of which have been there from the very start of the project. Together we can guarantee that we will do our very best to make you feel welcome into our quirky little family.

The History of Montieri

Montieri and its surrounding villages have historically been one of the most important areas in this region for two main reasons – mining and language. The town sits upon the ‘colline metallifere’ (ore hills) which have been mined for various minerals since the Etruscan times. The area is also considered the birthplace of the Italian language that we know today.

Mining Heritage

The Etruscans began mining in this area for silver, which was abundant in this territory. In 10th century, the competing powers of Volterra, Siena, Florence and the Imperial power battled for the rich subsoil that lay beneath us, leading to a period of economic prosperity which reached its peak in the 13th century. Here, the bishop of Volterra founded the local mint where a famous silver coin called ‘Grosso’ was minted.

The Origin of the Italian Language

On to the language: The famous ‘Breve di Montieri’ was written in 1219. This statute was the oldest of its kind written in Italian (traditionally statutes were written in Latin), and contained orders established and sworn by the same inhabitants of the castle governing Travale who eventually formed the constitutional unity of the future municipality. This document is considered to represent the first evidence of the forming of the Italian language.

Giacomo Papocchi – The Patron Saint of Montieri

In 1242 a young local miner called Giacomo Papocchi was accused of stealing silver from the mines. He was sentenced to an amputation of his right hand and left foot. The historical consensus reached, however, is that Giacomo was not a thief. He was simply a ‘Montierino’, who like any good and true ‘Montierino’, rebelled against the oppressive exploitation of the influential powers in Volterra and Siena. Giacomo sook to expunge his crime in the eyes of his God and concluded that the best way to do so would be to imprison himself in a cell near the church overhanging the village. He repented in this way for 46 years. He died a holy death on December the 28th, 1289, and became the patron saint of the village.

Mining Recommences

In the 14th century, the silver began to run out. Montieri entered a dark time until the second half of the 18th century, when a famous minerologist, Giovanni Arduino, discovered copper here and opened a few mines, including Carbonaie located by Prategiano in Montieri. Mining once again boomed in the early 1900’s when Montecatini S.p.A. began digging up copper, and later, pyrite. This led to another economic boom for the area, a railway was built to transport ore from Montieri to Piombino, where it was processed. The remnants of this railway can still be seen today.

The future of Montieri

The last mine, in Campiano, closed its doors in 1994. Campiano is close to the town of Boccheggiano and visible from the hotel. Since then, Montieri has been in a period of transition. Many young people have fled in the past 30 odd years to greener pastures in the cities, where jobs could be found.

However, more recently things have started to look up again. Tourism has grown thanks to its natural beauty, with new agriturismi and hotels cropping up regularly, and services have grown in line with this. Campiano has been bought by a number of entrepreneurs and is being turned into a helicopter storage, bakery and more. Montieri was also the pioneer of the famous ‘1 euro’ programme, where it sold its houses for a euro (with a commitment to refurbish the property) to entice people to return to the town and improve the state of its buildings, which led to many ex-locals and their decendants returning to spend summers and holidays here.

Overall, the future is bright for this amazing little corner of the world, and we have completely fallen in love with it. Our dream is to see it grow to heights unseen even when silver filled its hillsides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vin means oasis in Icelandic. But it is also closely related to vín, which means wine, and vinur, which means ‚a friend‘. This suits our little home because essentially it is a green, peaceful spot where you can drink wine and make friends.

We see it as a cross between a wine bar and a farmstay. We don’t make wine (yet) but we have invested our time and expertise in sourcing the best wines in the region.

Our cellar is robust, ranging from cheap and cheerful to exclusive fine wines. Our criteria are that all our wines are sound (not faulty), sustainable (organic/biodynamic/equivalent) and special (every bottle has a story).

We sell these wines at our restaurant, our bar and in our farm shop (now online) if you want to take some home.

We are located in 550m altitude so a good rule of thumb is that it will be approximately 6 degrees colder here in comparison to Florence, Siena, etc. We are also blessed by a regular cool breeze as we are on the top of a hill. The cooler nights and powerful fans in the room lead to a good nights sleep, even during the hottest days of summer. However, if you are particularly keen on Air Conditioning, we recommend selecting to stay at our Villa.

Here is a rough guide to the seasons here in Montieri. Please note we can’t predict how the weather will be during your stay, but this is the closest we can get!

January to March
Cold, cozy winter weather, occasional rain. Temperature ranges between 0-12 degrees celcius. Beautiful winter days still come out, but this season is reserved for those that enjoy the peace and quiet of the winter season.

April to May
Ideal spring weather. Often dry, 5-10 rainy days per month. Temperature ranges from 5-25 degrees celcius. Perfect for those that enjoy outdoor activities, or would like to see the luscious green spring nature here.

June to August
High summer season. Very dry and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 15-30 degrees celcius.

September to November
Sometimes summerish, sometimes autumnal, a beautifully unpredictable season that can change from one day to the next. Temperatures drop slightly to approximately 10-28 degrees,  and occasional rain showers come through. But overall one of the best seasons to visit the hotel as the greenery starts to come back to life after baking over the summer.

November to December
Cold, cozy winter weather, occasional rain. Temperature ranges between 5-15 degrees celcius. Beautiful winter days still come out, which is when we pick our olives, but this season is reserved for those that enjoy the peace and quiet of the winter season.

We are not an adult-only hotel but we are mindful of the fact that our guests appreciate the peace and tranquility that they can enjoy here. There are also plenty of hotels in the area better equipped to entertain the younger generation with activities and play areas, whereas our focus is more wine and food.

Nevertheless, please feel free to reach out if you would be interested in visiting with your family, we are always happy to chat!
